5. About the author

My name is Nicola Carley and I was born in the April of 1979 in a grim hospital in the even grimmer North West Kent ex-industrial town of Gravesend.

I was the first child of three to my then young parents Christopher and Lesley Carley and later, when my parents decided they couldn’t stand the sight of each other, had been down the aisle a couple more times and got new surnames and stuff, I gained another sister.

I was educated in the picturesque town of Chatham, which as Jimmy Carr remarked, “Looks as though the Luftwaffe had a great deal of fun [with].”  I was borderline on my 11 plus exams (a label which I am still shrugging off today) and after much cajoling, was offered entry to Fort Pitt Grammar School – my saving grace.  I went on to study English at London South Bank University (because let’s face it, there was no way Oxford would’ve looked twice at me) and graduated in 2001 to find my degree about as much use in the corporate world as a lock with no key.

Following a number of years in careers not at all suited to me, I discovered an ability to write and so, here we are – me, talking to you, about my first full-length book.  If you want to know more, then you’ll have to buy it and read it :)
